Emma Bonino, an Italian Senator, discusses the importance of enabling migrants to play a full role in European society. Bonino concludes that ”the challenge facing Europe today is to try and to succeed in living together in freedom and diversity” and she suggests several ways that Europe could go about achieving this.

In May 2011 the Council of Europe submitted its report on the future of multiculturalism in Europe. Drafted by a group of Wise Persons, the Living Together report proposes seventeen ideas for Europe to use in response to the rise of intolerance and political extremism in Europe.
