Matthew McVarish interview
In this interview, Matthew McVarish discusses his commitment to walking ten thousand miles between Europe’s capitals as part of Road to Change, a program working to end child sexual abuse by ending the silence that surrounds it. In the next 18 years, over 30 million children will be sexually abused, and so McVarish is walking to spread awareness for this huge human rights issue. He recently stopped at the Council of Europe in Strasbourg to share his story and meet with some of Europe’s top experts on this issue.

The Lake – encouraging children to speak about family sex abuse
This powerful video encourages children suffering sexual abuse within their family to “break the silence” and speak about it. Created by French film director Roland Edzard, the video graphically illustrates – in the context of an apparently happy family picnic – the psychological pressure that family abusers can apply to their victims. The film was produced for the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE) as part of the organisation’s ongoing “One in Five” campaign against sexual violence against children. It was also supported by the Cyprus-based A.G Leventis Foundation.

Child friendly justice
The Council of Europe has brought together ministers, MPs, children’s rights defenders and civil society representatives to finalise its new strategy on children’s rights. The strategy is designed to enhance the capacity of the Council of Europe and its 47 member states to ensure respect for children’s rights, in particular by developing child-friendly services, eliminating all forms of violence against children and by promoting a culture of respect for children’s rights, needs and opinions. One element of the broader 'Building a Europe for and with Children' programme concentrates on child-friendly justice.
